Having perfected her craft from an early age and discovering her unique tone and incredible range, Olsen began performing at local coffeehouses in St Louis during her teenage years. In Olsen added bassist Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Josh Jaeger to pad out her live stripped back sound whilst bringing a rocky element as she toured nationwide. Live reviews Angel Olsen If Angel Olsen’s music touches you or interests you in any way, it is a must see live. I have seen her with the full band twice this year and it is a real example of seeing the sounds and the lyrics on the record coming to life. They also played a couple of older songs including Sweet Dreams, during which she really belted ‘Goodbye’ with an expletive. Sweet Dreams was followed by a nice cover of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, which seemed to settle things down somewhat and loosened some limbs while still keeping in with the band’s general sound and mood and demonstrrated some of the influences. There was no encore but before the final song, which Olsen played solo following the rest of the band being cheered off, she told the crowd ‘I’m sorry if you didn’t get what you wanted today, or the next day

This is the fifth studio effort by the Tragically Hip singer Gord Downie, who continues to be a deeply important voice of the Canadian mosaic. He is the author of the graphic novel which bears the same name, and is hauntingly illustrated by Jeff Lemiere. The graphic novel should not be taken for granted in its weight and importance as it is more than a mere companion or some after-thought.
The Secret Path began as a simple collection of ten poems and took shape through a two day recording session at The Bathhouse Recording Studios. Drew and Dave Hamelin played all the instruments, while Gord Downie tearfully sang about a little Ojibwa boy, who died alone, because he was not Canadian. On September 9th, while visiting the Ogoki Post, Gord Downie released a personal statement that gives an important context for this release.
“Maturity” might not be the word that springs to mind when listening to Ty Segall’s Melted and Goodbye Bread, but those were the albums that tore the shit-kicking San Franciscan away from his Sonics-worship and propelled him toward a more melodic sound that’s damaged yet distinctive. The lo-fi guitar and caterwauling vocals were still there, but huffing all those paint fumes in the.

The 50 Best Songs of Here are the tunes that made us laugh, cry, rage, relax and generally feel better about ourselves. Prince, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen had left us. Mass shootings were plaguing the country. A dim-witted steak salesman was about to become the 45th presidenbrt. And, perhaps most devastating of all, Brangelina was kaput.
How would we survive another year? What would surviving even look like? Turning as we always do to music, we found ways to cope in both by turning inward and turning outward with our favorite songs. Some artists, like Hurray for the Riff Raff , Jessica Lea Mayfield, Sallie Ford and Sheer Mag, took shots at the resurgent patriarchy, whether by stoking public outrage or inviting us into their personal pain and redemption. Others, like Jay Som, Thundercat and Kevin Morby, fixed their gaze on the quiet pleasures and absurdities of everyday life, finding the sweet spot between the mundane and the sublime.
Here are the 50 songs that made us laugh, cry, rage, relax and generally feel better about ourselves in a year we feel fortunate to have outlasted. And honestly, the pleasure is all ours.

Michael Tedder January 15, – 9: Blame the trippy vibes of his Bowie-mash note Manipulator, or the psych-rock onslaught of Emotional Mugger for giving me that red-eyed impression, I suppose. Are you still in the Bay Area? No, I live in LA now. I knew you were in San Francisco for a long time. Was it just getting too gentrified?
Ty Segall Ty Segall on Black Flag, T Rex and why the Kinks made so much sense in 90s California He may be the reigning king of slacker rock – but Ty Segall is as prolific as they come.
Order From Drag City “Break A Guitar” busts the album wide open right at the outset, as it harnesses a thunderous glam-rock stomp that barely conceals huge hooks and Segall’s supple, helium-infused melodies. The distortion grows even more corrosive in “The Only One,” whose dueling guitar leads between Segall and his longtime second guitarist Emmett Kelly erupt gloriously into a fugue of frenzied abandon.
K” ups the ante even further, succumbing to a psychedelic-meets-hardcore attack that chugs along at the breakneck speed of a bad, bleak trip. But Ty Segall does more than throttle and thrash. Mikal Cronin , the group’s bassist and an excellent bandleader in his own right , joins Segall on vocals in “Take Care To Comb Your Hair ,” another acoustic song whose plaintive, plucky tendencies shift deliriously from folky tenderness to needling, fuzzed-out riffage by song’s end.
The album’s most ambitious moments, though, appear in “Warm Hands Freedom Returned. Keyboardist Ben Boye’s piano is given a more prominent spot in the complex arrangement, and the entire song reflects a Beatles -like sense of sophistication, complete with cryptic lyrics and elusive melancholia. Segall’s role models are still as plain as day — Marc Bolan, Ray Davies and Syd Barrett chief among them — but on Ty Segall, he’s taken yet another strong step toward turning retroactive garage rock into high art.

Photo by Leonard Drorian But during the penultimate set by Arizona’s Destruction Unit, three drummers, three guitar players, and one psychedelic wall of sound rattled Los Globos like sadomasochistic sex during full-scale war. In the process, a few journalist’s went deaf and nobody seemed to give a shit about Chrome, who were almost boring following Destruction Unit’s utter mayhem. The pairing was improbable; the results were potent. Their Echoplex show confirmed their respective and collective prowess.
The Coathangers – The Observatory – August 2, At the first-ever Burger a-Go-Go, Atlanta’s Coathangers unleashed a caustic, wigged-out performance that had everyone at the Observatory losing their shit.

From a conversation with T. Your most recent album is stylistically all over the place, which is the opposite of what most artists will say about their records. The more far out, and the more free we get, the better things are. Unlimited freedom sounds liberating, but even that can become its own kind of trap. When your options are totally unlimited, sometimes making a creative decision becomes even harder. Those were the exciting parts in the end, but it was frightening.
I wrote a song on the piano, and I forced myself to finish it. It ended up being one of my favorite ones on the record. Stuff like that that was weird, but fun. Sometimes you gotta throw all your old ideas out the window and do something new. How many different kinds of instruments can you play? I can just play guitars and bass, some synth stuff, very rudimentary piano, and drums. I feel like the ideas will still be there, the song structures, the same intuition, but the execution will be totally far out and weird.

Share Tweet By Quinn Thomas While Ty Segall is a becoming a more recognizable and household name, there is still a veil of mystery around him, despite having released 18 records in just over decade. He was gifted a stack of Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper records during his pubescent years and his life was changed. Head over heels for music, he started creating grimy authentic garage-rock inspired by bands like Thee Headcoats.

Trouble Will Find Me 84 4AD by The National “Not much on this album is immediate, and that’s a little disappointing, but more than any other National work, Trouble Will Find Me hints at depths upon depths hidden beneath the surface of thirteen very pretty songs. While it might not be their best album—nor does it break any new ground—business as usual for The National means something pretty great.

Skeleton was their third album and got them a lot more mainstream attention. Their sound has been described as “tropical punk” and is fairly unique. The songs are fast, pretty short, and largely sound the same with fast rhythms and swirly layers of bright guitars that make you feel like you’re in Hawaii or Florida and having a nervous breakdown. Not an “essential” album probably, but still fun. There’s no extras, but the cover photo looks great large.
